چکیده

Background: Atrial myxoma is uncommon and may be associated with brief isolated ischemic events. We describe a patient with atrial myxoma and an incompletely evaluated ischemic stroke followed 1 year later with almost complete brain necrosis. Summary ofReport: A 63-year-old woman presented with a rapidly progressive illness resulting in coma within 24 hours from multiple myxomatous emboli. Cranial computed tomographic scan demonstrated multiple hypodensities in both cerebellar and cerebral hemispheres. Postmortem examination revealed virtually complete brain necrosis, multiple peripheral artery embolizations, embolization in the coronary arteries with acute myocardial infarction, and tumor emboli in the spleen and kidneys. Conclusions: Although uncommon, atrial myxoma may present as a fatal multiple organ embolization that includes both anterior and posterior circulation territories of the brain. (Stroke 1993;24:1090-1092) KEY WoRDs * cerebral infarction * myxoma * tomography, x-ray computed

Frequency and type of renal and electrolyte disorders in fulminant hepatic failure.

Of 48 patients with fulminant hepatic failure who progressed to grade III or IV encephalopathy 38 showed evidence of renal impairment. In 32 of these patients the underlying cause could be placed initially into one of three categories-prerenal uraemia (4 patients), acute tubular necrosis (16), and "functional renal failure" (12). The latter differed in several respects from that seen with liver...

Brain Abscess Caused by Capnocytophaga Species Associated with Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Therapy

Capnocytophaga spp. are a rare cause of fulminant sepsis in individuals who have been bitten or scratched by a dog. Immunocompromised individuals are at high risk of Capnocytophaga spp. infections [1]. Anti-tumor necrosis factor-α (anti-TNF-α) drugs are a class of drugs that are used worldwide to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and selected other autoimmune inflammatory diseases. ...

Evaluation of Serum Levels of N-terminal Pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide and Atrial Natriuretic Peptide in Neonates with Respiratory Distress

Background: Acute respiratory distress (ARD) is a critical respiratory failure due to lung injury of neonates leading to the clinical appearance of poor lung compliance. The aimed of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic values in differentiating respiratory from heart diseases with using of N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) and Atrial natriuretic peptide(ANP) in neonates...
